"Jesus answered, "It is written: "Man shall not live on bread alone,

but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."

(Matthew 4:4)

1. Humans are spiritual beings:

God created humankind in his image and likeness to rule the earth:

  • Genesis 1:26, "Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

    God gave humans the Spirit:

  • 1 John 3:24, "Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us."

God put his laws in human hearts and minds:

  • Hebrews 10:16, “This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.”

2. Our body is dead if without spirit:

  • James 2:26, "As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead."

2. We need the spiritual food for our body not to be dead:

  • Matthew 4:4, “Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

3. To eat the spiritual food means to obey the will of God, as expressed in this verse:

  • John 4:34, “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work."

4. Jesus is the bread of life means for us to obey Jesus’ commands:

  • John 6:35, “Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

5. In the Last Supper, Jesus said to his disciples, “Take and eat; this is my body” means to remember his commands and obey it, as in John 4:34:

  • Matthew 26:26, “While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”’

6. How can we attain a peaceful world with empty stomachs and empty hearts?

Empty stomachs cannot build a peaceful world according to American Agronomist:

  • "You can't build a peaceful world on empty stomachs and human misery." - Norman Ernest Borlaug

What more if we have empty hearts that instead the hearts, we filed up treasures on earth:

  • Matthew 6:19-21, "Don't store up treasures here on earth, where they can be eaten by moths and get rusty, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where they will never become moth-eaten or rusty and where they will be safe from thieves. Wherever your treasure is, there your heart and thoughts will also be."

6. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit that God gave humans:

  • 1 Corinthians 6:19, "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;"
  • 1 John 3:24, "Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us."

7. God put his laws in our hearts and minds that we need spiritual food for the Spirit by obeying God’s laws:

  • Hebrews 10:16, “This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.”
