2019.02.19 – Spiritual Awakening Incident (Honor Your Parents)

Date:                    February 19, 2019

Location:              Barrigada, Guam

Narrator:              Etma

Today, February 19, is when my mother died in 1974. I was 23 years old, and I did not feel sad as mostly children would do. In 1979, the very first week staying alone in Chuuk, I realized that my mother is the hero of my life.

I wish to continue with the story when a rich man asked Jesus on how to attain eternal life.

The Rich and the Kingdom of God (Matthew 19:16-24, NIV)

16 Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”

17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”

18 “Which ones?” he inquired.

Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,’[a] and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’[b]

20 “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”

21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

I was not able to obey the above for I did not hear, or the religious teachers did not teach, especially to honor your mother and father. What I did in my early childhood till adulthood is to worship Virgin Mary, praying “Hail Mary” almost every day. And it is not in line with the following verses:

  • Matthew 12:46-50, "While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” 48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
  • Luke 11:27-28, "As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.” 28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

Jesus also mentioned the greatest commandment: Love Your Neighbor As Yourself, and it is expressed clearly with the following verse:

"Mark 12:33, “To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
