2010.12.30; Rizal Day Meaning Incident

Date:                  December 30, 2010

Location:           MOL, Dagonoy St., San Andres Bukid, Manila, Philippines

Narrator:            Etma

Narration:

     On December 30, 2010, I happened to think deeply of Rizal Day when I watched on TV the way this holiday being celebrated. The holiday is for the Filipinos to commemorate the death of our national hero, Jose Rizal, who was prosecuted by the Spanish colonial authorities  for sedition. J. P. Rizal was shot by the firing squad at Bagumbayan, Luneta, Philippines. I included here two pictures (below) which I took when I visited the place.

     In my visit, the thing I noticed right away was the statue of the friar with the Bible for I did not expect such servant of God with the Bible witnessing the killing.

     I watched the news attentively observing how the political leaders celebrated the holiday. They raised the Filipino flag while the band played the national anthem exactly at Rizal’s huge monument at Luneta Park. This made me think that we the Filipino people just remember and celebrate Rizal’s birth and death without following his footsteps in serving our country at least in some degree. And this reminded me of what the alleged Christians did too for Jesus, whose birth and death were so much celebrated without much effort to practice Jesus' commands and teachings for they focus on meaningless offerings, as expressed below;

  • Isaiah 1:13-14, “Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations— I cannot bear your worthless assemblies. Your New Moon feasts and your appointed festivals I hate with all my being. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them.”
  • Mark 7:7-8, “They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’ You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”

Analysis and Revelatory Message (as of 2013):

     Jose P. Rizal our national hero did great heroic job for the country and if at this time that we focus in the emulation of his deeds in loving our country, then it is not wasted his sacrifice for the country.

For our leaders to lead the Rizal Day Celebration is lesser in importance than serving the Filipino people that J. Rizal died for. J. Rizal will value more not just to commemorate his birth and death anniversary but to continue fight and maintain of what he fought for the country.

     The Philippine flag, above photo, is very distinct at Rizal Day Celebration on December 30, 2012 which serves as one of the main symbol in expression of Rizal’s heroism, aside from gigantic monument at the background.

This is the common practice worldwide having a holiday in honor of the heroes having monument and raising of flag while singing the national anthem, which huge amount of energy, time, and money are used instead in achieving the objectives of the heroes: the betterment of the country and the people.

By the same token, the Christian religious leaders and founders used to lead people also to spend much amount of energy, time, and money for the various holidays and festivals in honor of Jesus but not much for Jesus’ commands and God’s will. So, instead of too much anniversaries for the heroes and Jesus, why not help the flock of God living in extreme poverty and miseries?
